Project 2 Proposal - The Portable Drum Kit

The Portable Drum Kit



Why is this toy fun?:

The Portable Drum Kit is an alternative drum kit for those who want to just pick up an instrument and play where you want. It's natural acoustics makes this kit playable anywhere to which the user pleases. With bass and snare indicators on the surface of the kit, it provides a dynamic for the user to play with. The Portable Drum Kit can be played acoustically but it is also capable with amplification and electronic play back capability built within the kit. It has the most compact mini studio for recording drum loops on the go.

The kit also acts as a storage for all of the compact recording and sound equipment that would be implemented within the instrument. The kit comprises of a mini subwoofer and gain speakers located at the base of , a pair of standard drum sticks, an m-audio drum loop recorder and a compartment for storage of cds or any miscellaneous items for the instrument. The interior is made up of acoustic foam for protection of the equipment and noise reduction.

The portable drum kit allows hours of fun for musicians and for people who want to just pick up the drums and play without the full sound of a regular acoustic kit. This instrument can be played anywhere one pleases because of its portability and secure safe storage. With its durable structure and material it can be used by anyone. Your musical imagination is the limit.


Model Prototype and Interaction:







User Testing Comments:

- The mini drum sticks were too short and hard to maneuver standard drumming techniques and hard to hold with bigger hands

- It was too simple

- Needed some way to record the user's drum pattern

- There was no use for the headphones

- The portable snare took too much space on the surface of the drum

Improvements:

- Standard pair of drumsticks for more comfortable feel

- A bigger kit container to hold all of the equipment

- M-Audio recording device for drum pattern playback

- Gain and Subwoofer speaker system for amplified drum sounds

- Acoustic foam to prevent damage to the equipment and to block noise

- Aluminum alloy casing for durability

- Snare and bass skin for different drum sounds on the surface
