Magic Sustenance pros and cons

Magic sustenance

Comments, Pros and Cons given by Intro to Experience Design of Wednesdays 8:30 to 11:30 (a.k.a Predator vs. Prey class)

We voted for the best interaction of the Activate event, and Magic sustenance obtained the most number of votes.

Comments (first impressions and the interaction as we saw it)

- The experience attracted a lot of people because of the large 'table' covered in soil and a crowd of people around it

- Upon entry you are given instructions

- You are then given a seed and asked to plant it in the soil

- Upon exit a veggie or a fruit comes out of a soil and you get to keep it

- As an extension you get to eat your veggie/fruit

- Majority of our class filled out an evaluation for this experience, with positive feedback

- This interaction attracted large crowds and was always full of people

- There was a lot of laughter and people seemed to enjoy it

- People were amused with the reward

- Some wished there was a bit more to the extension

- People tried a few times to see what they can get

- Some people didn't keep the reward if they couldn't eat it right away

- Some thought it was dirty, had to wash your hands after

- A suggested improvement was to improve the accuracy (pop the reward out where the seed was planted)

- Some people didn't enjoy it as much, maybe they had different expectations

- People stood around the table talking and interacting

- The table itself was well design and very cleverly done.

Pros:

  • It was a unique experience, different to everything else made it active.
  • It had an element of surprise in it, you didn’t know what fruit or veggie was coming out for you.
  • It was quite exciting.
  • In a way it was delicious, you got food for free
  • Wasn’t wasteful at all, everything they used was recycled and the fruits were taken by the people who participated in the interaction.

Cons:

  • A good way to improve the experience would have been to give less root vegetables and more easy to eat food at the moment.
  • The washing station was a bit messy and disorganized, it could have been better.
  • Have a mechanism to re-use the fruit people didn’t really want. i.e there was fruit in the table beside the washroom that people were just leaving there. After a while you could see fruit all around the first floor.
  • The concept and purpose of the interaction needed to be a little bit more defined and clear. As a group, we had trouble defining the purpose of the interaction. What was the message intended?

-Since there is no entry and no exit...there isn't any extension...maybe a webiste?

-If the group decided to select you as the 'victim', you would be surrounded by people and treated like a celebrity for a split second. Some found this a bit scary

-Once your picture is taken, it is thenuploaded and talked about at the V.I.P. room

  • Some were confused by the idea
  • The talking was amusing, but the experience was laking something
  • It was fun to observe though
  • Many thought the outside and the inside paparazzi experiences were not connected enough or not clear, because it takes a while to put the two together
  • Some people were shocked to see their picture displayed on the screen
  • Some were shocked and scared of people running after them
  • Closer placement of both parts might have been beneficial

OCADVAS

-Signs and the loud misc attracted a lot of people
-Upon entry you were given paint and instructions
-You then painted what you wanted and where you wanted
-You then would paint at your will
-When you feellike you are done you hand over the paint and leave
-No sure about the extension
  • The location was very good
  • Was very well organized
  • Each 'canvas' had a theme to keep the drawings clean
  • There was a lot of laughter
  • Some found it a little frustrating that many times the 'canvas' could not remail still
  • Music was a bit too loud

- You thenpullout a lollipop and you are done...no exit
- As an extention, you get to enjoy the lollipop
  • The set up was nice
  • There were five possibilities of an outcome: lillipop, button, both, crocodile bitting, water

  • Curiousity "What's behind the curtain?"
  • The experience makes you feel like you are in a real salon
  • The sound of the scissors and the hair coming out of nowhere was fascinating
  • The girls did a good job acting out thier roles
  • The hair color on the final picture is different, thus not very convincing

TV/Couch

-You enter by sitting on the couch

-You then watch a movie

-And you leave when you want

  • This was actually an experience
  • Atracted almost no people
  • I wish there was a banner to know what this was or someone to ask wha this was all about
  • It would have attracted more people if there was a banner

FREE BEATS

  • Although no one filled out an evaluation form for FREE BEATS it was rather busy most of the time
  • The weather prevented it from attracting more people
  • It was attracting people outside of OCAD
  • It would be nice to have an extension, maybe just record the beats created and put them on the web
  • It was fun because it didn'tlimit you in any way

-The attraction would deffenatly be the noise

-You pick an instrument upon entarance

-During the engagment you play the instrudent and when you had enough you exit and put the instrument back

15 Minutes of Fame

-Attracts the participants due to its large construction

-Upon entry you see a large canvas and holding a bucket

-During the engagment you watch paint drip all over the canvas

-No exit and no extention, after you let go of the bucket you are done

  • Kind of fun to make a mess
  • The engagment is very short
  • The experiencemight have been improved if exit and extention was thought through
  • You kind of wish there was more control over the experience, then just push the bucket
  • Over time there was too much paint on the canvas
  • People thought it was fun and looked nice
  • Not too many people seemed to be interested
